What to Expect in SportsPress 2.5

A major WordPress update is just around the corner, with a target release date of November 14, 2017. WordPress 4.9 will introduce a number of changes focused on text widgets and theming.

In preparation for these changes, we’re also working on a major SportsPress update. Not only will we be testing and optimizing the plugin for the next version of WordPress, but SportsPress 2.5 will introduce a number of highly anticipated features and improvements to performance all around.

Track the Progress

We’ve created a GitHub project for SportsPress 2.5 to track the progress as we continue to develop the features needed for this update. Some of the features have already been added, so feel free to check them out if you’re the adventurous type that likes to live life on the edge!

As always, we urge you to keep a full backup of your site whenever making big changes like this. We also don’t recommend installing directly from GitHub until it’s been officially released.

New Features to Expect

We’ve gathered some of the most popular feature requests from the SportsPress Ideaboard, where users have submitted and voted on ideas for SportsPress.

Here are some important features that we are aiming to include in version 2.5:

  • Event results importer
  • Player of the match
  • Mid-season transfers

With the help of members in our forums and Slack community, we’ve also come up with a list of improvements for this update:

  • Career totals based on averages
  • Simplify statistics for opponents
  • Minimize database calls by including IDs in query
  • Automatically assign seasons and competitions to teams and players via events
  • Match day filters
  • Segments using a combination of seasons and competitions

In addition to these features, we’re also working on an update to SportsPress Pro, which is planned to include the following:

  • Live score tickers
  • Referees*
  • Group stage for tournaments

If you’re wondering how we came up with this list…

Update: We’ve decided to include referees in the free version of SportsPress. Due to technical limitations related to backwards-compatibility, the segments and mid-season transfers features have been postponed.

Update 2: Live score tickers have been postponed and other features have been scheduled to be included in this update.
